Phyllis Ethel Slivon Richards, a beloved figure within her community and family, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on August 14, 2025. Surrounded by her devoted husband of 71 years, Joseph Robert “Bob” Richards, and their three children, Cathy, Bob Jr., and Jeff, her legacy endures through the numerous lives she touched.

Born on September 21, 1931, in Gary, Indiana, Phyl spent her formative years in the suburbs of Chicago. She started her academic journey at MacMurray College for Women before transferring to Iowa State University, where her father selected the renowned Home Economics Department for her education. It was during her time at Iowa State that she met Bob Richards in an English class, sparking a romantic relationship that blossomed into marriage shortly after their graduation in 1954.

Phyl’s professional life included a variety of roles, from modeling at Carson Pirie Scott in Chicago to teaching junior high science and even selling Easterling silver door-to-door. However, her primary role for which she found immense pride was that of a nurturing wife and mother. She was dedicated to creating home-cooked meals from scratch, often preparing family favorites such as beef stroganoff, cream puffs, and cranberry apple bake. Beyond cooking, she was actively involved in her children’s lives, driving them to sports practices from football to ballet, showcasing her unwavering support for their pursuits.

In addition to her family responsibilities, Phyl displayed her creative side by drawing inspiration from her favorite store, Neiman Marcus, where she would recreate couture outfits for herself and her daughter, Cathy. Known for her glamorous beauty, she was always seen with perfectly coiffed hair and signature bright pink lipstick and nails, embodying elegance in every aspect of her life. Furthermore, she also demonstrated remarkable toughness, showcasing her protective instinct by breaking up fights involving her sons, Bob Jr. and Jeff.

Phyl often stood beside Bob during his equestrian endeavors, taking on the role of his groom and supporting him at competitions. In her later years, she found joy in the companionship of a husky-labrador mix named Sophie, with whom she shared a special bond, often indulging Sophie with forbidden treats like bacon and sausage.

Recognized for her quiet strength, Phyl was not only a champion for her family but also a source of positivity for those around her. She had the innate ability to see the good in others and uplift them during times of hardship. Her legacy is carried on by her three children: Catherine Richards Williams of New York City, Robert Paul Richards, and Jeffery Fred Richards of Augusta, Georgia. She also leaves behind six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who cherish her memory.

Phyl’s health in her later years was given the utmost care by dedicated caregivers including Donna Anderson, Alice Germany, and Ethel Bennett. A private graveside service took place at Westover Memorial Park on August 16, 2025, attended by immediate family members, ensuring that her final farewell was intimate and personal.

In remembrance of Phyl’s life and her impact on others, the family welcomes donations in her name to Aldersgate United Methodist Church or the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Augusta, Georgia, continuing her legacy of service and community support.
