Butler High School faced a power outage on a Tuesday morning, impacting nearby customers. Wellstar MCG Health had to cancel outpatient appointments due to the outage. The issue arose shortly after a winter storm caused previous disruptions in the area, affecting thousands of customers. Officials are working to restore power and manage the effects of the storm, while residents are advised to limit travel due to hazardous conditions.
Augusta – Butler High School experienced a power outage on Tuesday morning, which was quickly resolved by 9:05 a.m. According to school officials, the power disruption affected not only the high school but also surrounding customers in the Lumpkin Road area. Reports indicated that around 8:50 a.m., over 500 customers were without power due to the outage.
In addition to Butler High School, Wellstar MCG Health and the Medical Office Building also experienced a power outage early Tuesday. During the outage, the Medical Office Building was running on generator power and had to cancel outpatient appointments that were scheduled after 12 p.m. Crews were actively working to restore power, while the Georgia Cancer Center remained operational and unaffected by the outage.
This power outage follows a series of weather-related disruptions experienced over the past weekend in the Augusta region. On Saturday, a winter storm impacted approximately 2,300 customers in the Augusta, Waynesboro, and Thomson areas, causing numerous power outages. Georgia Power reported around 60 outages in those areas early that morning, but by 9:30 a.m., crews had managed to restore power to more than 300 customers. In Aiken, a separate outage affected about 19 customers, which Dominion Energy reported was resolved by 9:45 a.m.
The National Weather Service had previously issued a winter storm warning for northern Georgia and metro Atlanta, which was set to conclude at 7 a.m. on Saturday. This storm prompted a state of emergency declaration throughout Georgia that remains in effect until Tuesday. Early Saturday, local forecasts predicted clearing skies with temperatures expected to reach a high of 44°F and a low of 21°F. On Sunday, the forecast indicated sunny conditions with a high of 47°F.
As a precaution against hazardous road conditions resulting from the winter storm, Augusta officials urged residents to limit travel. Roads were treated with brine and snowplows were deployed by the Georgia Department of Transportation to prevent icing. As a result of the inclement weather, schools and most government facilities were closed on Friday.
This weather disruption also led to the postponement of sporting events at Augusta University. Both the men’s and women’s basketball games against USC Aiken were rescheduled for Sunday, January 12, with the women’s game slated to start at 1:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 3:30 p.m.
As Augusta begins to recover from the effects of the winter storm and related power outages, officials continue to monitor and respond to the needs of residents. With power restored to key facilities and services back on track, the community is expected to resume normal activities in the coming days.
