Augusta University Enhances Campus Safety Measures

Augusta, Georgia – Augusta University has enhanced its campus safety measures with new technology and resources aimed at ensuring the well-being of students and staff. The institution is committed to providing a secure environment with a 24/7 police patrol and improved security systems.

Recent upgrades funded by a grant will see hundreds of additional surveillance cameras installed across the campus. The university is also introducing code blue emergency phones, which will allow individuals to quickly call for help in urgent situations. Another significant addition is the upgrading of license plate reader technology to assist in detecting potential threats.

To support the safety of students further, Augusta University has introduced the Rave Guardian app. This application provides various features including campus and emergency alerts, digital escort services for students moving around campus, and an option for immediate contact with the police via phone or text. As part of its commitment to safety, students are advised to share their whereabouts and itineraries with trusted individuals when off-campus. This practice is aimed at ensuring additional security and accountability among students.

Emergency Safe Stations

In a proactive approach to combat potential drug overdoses, Augusta University has introduced emergency safe station cabinets placed strategically at various locations, including libraries, student activity centers, dorms, and classrooms. There are currently 20 such stations across the campuses, designed to provide immediate care for overdose situations and first aid. This initiative is particularly crucial in light of the alarming rise in drug-related incidents, especially substances like Adderall laced with fentanyl.

Increased Local Law Enforcement Presence

In conjunction with the university’s measures, the local sheriff’s office has enhanced safety protocols downtown to protect families and businesses. Community safety officers are now deployed during the daytime to address issues and assist local businesses, while at night increased patrols ensure at least one deputy is present per block. This strategy includes a mix of marked and unmarked vehicles to enhance visibility and deter potential threats.

Additionally, the sheriff’s office plans to implement a mobile command staff that will manage large events to ensure adequate coverage and respond quickly to emergencies. These actions are directly aimed at being responsive to community concerns, with the overarching goal of making downtown Augusta a safe and secure environment for all residents and visitors.
