Community Mourns Loss of Beloved Augusta Figures

The community of Augusta is coming together to mourn the loss of two beloved figures: Deacon Robert Lee Royal and Madge Welch, known affectionately as Mama Madge. Deacon Robert Lee Royal, 86, passed away on August 21, 2025, while Mama Madge transited peacefully on August 24, 2025. Both individuals are remembered for their significant contributions to the community and their deep-rooted faith.

Funeral Arrangements for Deacon Robert Lee Royal

Deacon Royal’s family has scheduled a visitation for Friday, August 29, 2025. Family members will welcome visitors from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Phinazee & Son Funeral Home, located at 404 West 8th Street, Waynesboro, GA 30830. A public viewing will follow from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services are set for Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Givens Grove Baptist Church, situated at 1132 Givens Church Road, Sardis, GA 30456. Interment will follow at the church cemetery, with the services being managed by Phinazee & Son Funeral Home.

Memorial Services for Mama Madge Welch

Mama Madge’s funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. The service will be held at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, located at 2524 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, GA. Family members will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Following the funeral, burial will take place at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, located at 1350 Church Street, Avera, GA 30803.

She is survived by her children—Heyward Fulghum (Teresa), Anthony Welch (Debbie), and Penny Sellers—as well as her grandchildren, including Sara Beth, Lee, Lauren, Tony, Blake, Jordan, and Leslie Kate, along with twelve great-grandchildren and numerous friends.
