Augusta, Georgia – Teddy Lee York, a respected member of the Augusta community, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on August 31, 2025. His passing marks the end of a life dedicated to family, faith, and service to others.
Teddy York was born on June 29, 1943, in Royston, Georgia. He grew up in a family that valued education and hard work, being the son of the late Ralph Plumer and Lillie Mae Atkinson York. After completing his education at Hart County High School in 1961, York went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration from Augusta College in 1976. His professional journey spanned 40 years at DSM Chemicals, where he ultimately retired in 2006 as Director of Material Resources.
Throughout his life, Teddy was known for his unwavering commitment to his church and community. He was a devoted member of Abilene Baptist Church for over three decades, actively participating in numerous church programs and volunteering his time. In addition to his church involvement, he dedicated many hours to the Broad Street Ministry and was a disaster relief volunteer for the Southern Baptist Convention, illustrating his deep sense of social responsibility.
Teddy’s personal life was equally rich. He is remembered as a loving husband to his late wife, Marilyn Kesler York, with whom he spent 55 cherished years. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his older sisters, Glaydelle York Weaver and Geneva York Viera.
He is survived by his daughter, Melanie York Shepherd, and her husband Sandy, who reside in Savannah, Georgia. His son, Wesley York, and his wife Blakely, live in Winder, Georgia. Teddy took great pride in his family, particularly in his four grandsons: Edwin Shepherd, Ashton York, Collin York, and Embry York. He is also survived by three brothers: Edward York of Bonaire, Georgia; Richard York of Rome, Georgia; and Rudy York of Royston, Georgia.
A graveside service to honor Teddy York’s life will be held on September 2, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Abilene Cemetery in Martinez, Georgia, with Rev. Bill Harrell officiating. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects and celebrate the legacy of a man who lived a life of service and devotion.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Abilene Baptist Church located at 3917 Washington Rd, Martinez, GA 30907; Broad Street Ministries at 20 Broad St, Augusta, GA 30901; or Hope Haven, c/o St. John’s Church, 1 West Macon Street, Savannah, GA.
