Augusta – The Salvation Army of Augusta has launched crucial food and school supply drives this month to assist local families facing economic hardships. In partnership with Southbound Smokehouse, the organization is calling for food donations to meet the growing demand in the community. All donations can be made at any Salvation Army location in Augusta or at Southbound Smokehouse located at 1009 Center Street.

The Salvation Army serves an average of 140 meals each day, helping those who struggle with food insecurity. The Center of Hope under the organization provides not only breakfast and dinner for shelter residents but also offers free community dinners to anyone in need. This ongoing initiative aims to alleviate some of the challenges faced by families in Augusta.

To keep up with the increasing demand, the Salvation Army is specifically seeking donations of canned goods, rice, pasta, and other non-perishable foods. Major Jonathan Raymer, the Area Commander for The Salvation Army in Augusta, has noted the significant impact that food insecurity has on families in the community and emphasized that this drive is fundamentally about providing hope.

In addition to the food drive, a school supply drive is being conducted in collaboration with Farmhaus Burger throughout July. The goal of this initiative is to provide backpacks and essential school supplies to children currently living at the Center of Hope shelter. Approximately 14 children stay at this facility each night, where they receive support from dedicated Salvation Army caseworkers and are transported to and from school in partnership with the Richmond County School System.

The necessity of ensuring that children experiencing homelessness have the required supplies for school is a priority, as highlighted by Raymer. This approach emphasizes stability and preparedness for these young students as they face the challenges of their situation.

Donations for school supplies can be delivered to Farmhaus Burger at 1204 Broad St., Augusta, or any Salvation Army location. For those who prefer to contribute online, an Amazon wish list for both food and school supplies is available on the Augusta Salvation Army website, enabling individuals to purchase and ship items directly to the shelter.

Brian Brittingham, owner of Southbound Smokehouse, expressed his commitment to the community through this partnership, reiterating the importance of supporting local families in need. Similarly, Sean Wight, owner of Farmhaus Burger, expressed enthusiasm for the school supply initiative, underscoring the essential role of community support in making a difference in the lives of those facing hardship.

The Salvation Army of Augusta continues to champion the needs of the vulnerable populations in the region, with ongoing efforts to address food insecurity and educational resources for children. These initiatives not only provide immediate assistance but also foster a sense of hope and stability during challenging times.
