Augusta Undergoes Major Revamp at The Patch Golf Course Featuring Tiger Woods’ New Short Course

Construction is currently in progress on a significant redesign of Augusta’s municipal golf course, known as The Patch. The revitalization project features a brand-new short course called The Loop at The Patch, which has been developed by golf legend Tiger Woods and his TGR Design company. This initiative, known as The Patch Project, aims to enhance the 18-hole course while expanding access to golf for people of all ages and skill levels.

The Patch Project is a collaborative effort involving Masters Tournament Charities, the City of Augusta, Augusta Technical College, and First Tee. The project is expected to breathe new life into the local golfing experience.

Current Progress and Future Plans

Cleanup operations following the damage caused by Hurricane Helene have been successfully completed, and construction crews are actively working on the project. Since mid-June, the course has been receiving truckloads of sod, with deliveries of up to 12 trucks daily, each carrying approximately 30-32 rolls of sod. The total amount of sod delivered is estimated to be around 550 trucks.

The short course, The Loop at The Patch, was fully turfed by August 3, and the entire main 18-hole course is on track to be completely grassed by mid-October. The ultimate goal is to have both courses ready to welcome golfers by spring 2026.

Enhancing Participation in Golf

Recent analysis indicates a notable growth in the game of golf since the COVID pandemic, especially among female players. Industry experts believe that projects like The Patch will be key in sustaining this positive momentum. The Patch Project is designed to keep golfing experiences affordable for local residents in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA).

As part of the renovation, 125 new trees will be planted, and a new clubhouse along with on-course comfort stations will be constructed. The course redesign will also incorporate existing corridors from 11 original holes of the previous Patch layout.

Plans include a new pump system to service the entire property effectively. In addition to golf, the TGR Foundation is set to establish a fourth TGR Learning Lab in Augusta, providing STEAM education opportunities to local students, specifically those from underserved communities. The anticipated opening for this educational facility is scheduled for 2028.

Operational Changes and Community Focus

As part of the redesign, the course’s pricing structure will undergo adjustments, with different rates being implemented during early April in line with the Masters season. Augusta National Golf Club chairman has emphasized the importance of maintaining affordability despite the renovations.

In conjunction with these developments, Augusta Technical College’s golf course management program will play a crucial role in workforce development associated with The Patch renovation. This focus aligns with the community-driven goal of enhancing public golf opportunities while maintaining the history and charm of The Patch, which has been a local treasure since its establishment in 1928.

The ambitious undertaking aims not only to improve the golfing experience but also to empower the local community through education and affordable recreational opportunities.
