Augusta, GA – The Ironman 70.3 triathlon is set to return to Augusta on Sunday, September 28, 2025, bringing with it significant traffic disruptions for local drivers. The event will cause traffic disruptions starting from 4 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the day of the race.

The race will officially commence at 7 a.m., beginning with a 1.2-mile swim from the Sharon Jones Amphitheater in North Augusta to the Fifth Street Marina located in downtown Augusta. Following the swim, athletes will transition to a 56-mile cycling leg that weaves through south Augusta before returning to the transition area at Fifth Street Depot to begin the 13.1-mile running segment. This running segment will take participants along the Augusta Riverwalk and North Augusta Greeneway, ultimately concluding at the Augusta Common.

To ensure the safety of both participants and spectators, a series of safety measures will be implemented. These include the presence of dozens of security vehicles, alongside local law enforcement and city vehicles, tasked with monitoring road closures and overall safety throughout the event. Major intersections along the cycling and running routes will be under the watchful eye of law enforcement officers.

The first group of cyclists is expected to start their leg around 7:19 a.m. Organizers foresee the race leaders beginning their running segment at approximately 9 a.m. Athletes must complete their course by the mandated cut-off time of 6 p.m. To facilitate the race, one lane of Reynolds Street will be designated for the race, marked by cones. While Reynolds Street will remain open for westbound traffic, the eastbound lane from 13th Street to Fifth Street will be closed. Drivers are cautioned about potential delays on 13th Street during the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Traffic disruptions are expected to impact several roads including Fifth Street and Sibley Street, with certain areas strictly prohibiting parking during the event. Motorists are advised to find alternative parking in areas not affected by the race route. Organizers have assured participants and the public that they anticipate all roads will be clear by around 3 p.m. following the conclusion of race activities.

In a related note, a confirmed case of human West Nile virus has been reported in Richmond County by the Georgia Department of Public Health. Residents and visitors are advised to remain vigilant regarding mosquito-borne illnesses, especially during outdoor events such as the Ironman.
