Grovetown – The Columbia County School District held a crucial safety forum on Monday night at Grovetown Middle School, responding to rising concerns about student security. This forum marked the first event in the district’s fourth annual “Let’s Talk” series, aimed at fostering dialogue between parents and school officials about various safety issues affecting students.
During the event, parents were encouraged to raise questions about pressing issues such as bullying, drug addiction, gangs, and vaping. The discussions revealed that even younger students are facing exposure to these challenges, underscoring the urgency for community engagement in these matters. Penny Jackson, the Associate Superintendent of Operations and Support for Columbia County, highlighted the prevalence of these issues among the youth.
Additionally, Gary Owens, the Chief of Police for the Columbia County School District, emphasized the necessity for parents to engage in difficult discussions regarding child safety and their online activities. Encouragement was also given to students to remain aware of their surroundings and school environment by Della Hughes, the Director of Student Support. To further promote safety, the district is deploying a strategic safety plan for the upcoming Homecoming dances, establishing that the safety of students and staff remains a high priority at all school events.
The conversation comes in the wake of a recent incident involving an 18-year-old Grovetown High School student, Prince Zahur Malik Nixon, who was arrested for possessing a firearm in a school safety zone. Nixon is alleged to have brought a 9mm Smith & Wesson firearm to the school and was reported to be holding it in a video that surfaced on social media. The video led school administrators to alert the Columbia County School District Police, who later found Nixon off-campus. He is currently being held in the Columbia County Detention Center with a bond set at $5,100.
In light of growing concerns and incidents, the Columbia County School District stresses the importance of a collaborative effort between parents and school staff to maintain a secure environment. Parents are strongly encouraged to report any concerning incidents to local authorities promptly.
The next “Let’s Talk” forum is scheduled for November 17th at 5:30 p.m. at Evans Middle School, providing another opportunity for parents and community members to engage with school officials on student safety and other relevant issues.
As the Columbia County School District continues to navigate these challenges, the message remains clear: student and staff safety is a primary concern, and a proactive approach is necessary to foster a secure learning environment for all students.
