A suspect is in custody, while two others remain at large following a shooting incident in Augusta on Friday morning. The attack, which left a 39-year-old male victim injured, occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Curry Street and Browns Lane, behind a Family Dollar store on Broad Street.
The victim, identified as Larry Meminger Jr. from Augusta, sustained multiple gunshot wounds but managed to reach a business on Broad Street to call for help after the shooting. Emergency medical crews transported him to Wellstar MCG Hospital, where he was reported to be talking and alert at the time of admission.
At the scene of the shooting, deputies discovered at least 20 shell casings, suggesting a significant exchange of gunfire. Shortly thereafter, a suspect vehicle, described as a white Chevrolet Tahoe, was located by deputies at approximately 12:45 p.m. When officers attempted a traffic stop on the Tahoe, the driver fled, prompting a vehicle pursuit.
During the chase, the Tahoe collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Second Street and Watkins Street. The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and was also taken to Wellstar MCG Health. After the crash, the driver of the Tahoe fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by deputies.
The apprehended suspect has been identified as Santrez Ellis, 25 years old, who now faces several charges, including aggravated assault, firearm possession by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during a crime, possession of marijuana with intent, and various traffic violations. Warrants have also been issued for two other suspects involved in the incident, Dominique Ellis, 38, and Eshaud Ellis, 27. They face charges identical to those of Santrez Ellis.
This shooting incident marks the second shooting to occur in Augusta within two days. The first incident involved a Richmond County deputy who was injured in a shooting while responding to an armed robbery at a BP gas station. The robbery suspect, identified as Dalyn Dewayne Elder, was also injured in that encounter.
Sheriff Eugene Brantley publicly commended the law enforcement response to both incidents and expressed a strong commitment to holding violent offenders accountable for their actions. He acknowledged ongoing issues with violence in the community despite overall crime rates reportedly being down, although these statistics were not immediately verified.
In recent weeks, Augusta has also seen a troubling uptick in violence, as an Edgefield County bus driver was recently arrested for driving under the influence, and a tragic incident occurred over a week prior when a 16-year-old was fatally shot at Augusta Mall. These incidents have raised concerns among residents regarding safety in the community.
Authorities continue to investigate both shootings and are urging anyone with information related to these incidents or the suspects at large, to come forward and provide assistance to law enforcement.
