News Summary
Augusta faced its second shooting incident in just two days, involving a man shot multiple times on Curry Street. Despite severe injuries, the victim sought help and was taken to a local hospital. Authorities have launched a manhunt for additional suspects involved in the violence, which follows a recent trend of declining crime in the area. The community remains on edge as investigations continue.
Augusta experienced a second shooting in just two days when a man was shot multiple times on Friday morning. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Curry Street and Browns Lane, located behind a Family Dollar store on Broad Street. The victim, identified as 39-year-old Larry Meminger from Augusta, was reportedly approached by a vehicle before the shooting took place.
Despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, Meminger was able to reach a nearby business on Broad Street to seek assistance. He was subsequently transported to Wellstar MCG hospital by emergency medical crews, where he was reported to be alert and talking upon arrival.
On the scene of the shooting, deputies discovered at least 20 shell casings, indicating the severity of the attack. Following up on leads, officials located a white Chevrolet Tahoe around 12:45 p.m. that they believed was connected to the shooting incident. However, when deputies attempted a traffic stop, the Tahoe fled, prompting a pursuit. The vehicle later collided with another car at the intersection of Second Street and Watkins Street, resulting in minor injuries to the other driver, who was also taken to Wellstar MCG Health for treatment.
The driver of the Tahoe, identified as 25-year-old Santrez Ellis, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by deputies. He faces several charges including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during a crime, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, as well as traffic offenses.
During the investigation, authorities are also searching for two additional suspects involved in the incident: 38-year-old Dominique Ellis and 27-year-old Eshaud Ellis. Both suspects are expected to face similar charges related to the shooting.
This shooting marks the second violent incident within Augusta in just 48 hours. The previous day, on Thursday morning, a Richmond County deputy was injured in a shooting that occurred after deputies responded to an armed robbery at a BP gas station. This incident resulted in an officer-involved shooting alongside a suspect, Dalyn Dewayne Elder, who was also injured during the confrontation. Notably, this shooting marks the third injury to a deputy from gunfire in the region this year.
Despite these recent events, reports indicate a general trend of declining violence in the area. However, the occurrences of the shootings may create a perception of rising crime in the community. Adding to the apprehension among residents, just a week earlier, a 16-year-old was fatally shot at Augusta Mall, which coincided with the arrest of a bus driver in nearby Edgefield County for DUI.
Authorities continue to investigate both incidents and are urging community members to come forward with any additional information that could assist in clearing the ongoing cases. The Augusta community remains vigilant as the police work to enhance safety and ensure justice is served.
