Augusta Shooting Leaves One Man Hospitalized; Suspects Sought

A shooting in Augusta on Friday morning has left one man in the hospital and prompted law enforcement to search for multiple suspects. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Curry Street and Browns Lane, located behind a Family Dollar store that faces Broad Street. The victim, 39-year-old Larry Meminger Jr., was shot multiple times by an unidentified assailant who approached him in a vehicle.

After sustaining his injuries, Meminger was able to reach a neighboring business on Broad Street, where he called for assistance. Emergency medical crews quickly arrived and transported him to Wellstar MCG hospital. At the facility, Meminger was reported to be talking and alert, though the extent of his injuries remains unclear.

Law enforcement officers responding to the scene found at least 20 shell casings, indicating a serious exchange of gunfire. The investigation soon led deputies to a white Chevrolet Tahoe, believed to be connected to the shooting, around 12:45 p.m. While attempting to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle, it fled, sparking a police pursuit.

The chase culminated at the intersection of Second Street and Watkins Street, where the Tahoe collided with another vehicle. The driver of that second vehicle sustained minor injuries and was also transported to Wellstar MCG hospital for treatment. In a separate yet concerning incident, during police activities related to the pursuit, a Richmond County deputy was shot on Washington Road, marking the third deputy this year to be injured in a shooting.

The suspect in custody, 25-year-old Santrez Ellis, fled the Tahoe on foot after the crash but was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement. Ellis now faces multiple charges, which include aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Authorities have also obtained warrants for two additional suspects connected to the shooting, 38-year-old Dominique Ellis and 27-year-old Eshaud Ellis, who face similar charges.

This incident marks the second shooting to occur in Augusta within two days. The earlier shooting involved a Richmond County deputy who was shot while responding to an armed robbery at a BP gas station. Law enforcement officials, including Sheriff Eugene Brantley, have voiced a strong commitment to holding accountable those who perpetrate acts of violence within the community.

Meminger Jr. has a history that includes multiple arrests for charges related to drug dealing, theft, robbery, and domestic violence incidents, highlighting the complex nature of individuals involved in such violent occurrences.

As the search for additional suspects continues, law enforcement urges anyone with information related to the incidents to come forward. The community remains on high alert as officials work rigorously to ensure the safety and security of Augusta residents.
