Augusta – Accelerate Augusta celebrated the grand opening of its new business center on Friday at 11 a.m. The center, located at 600 Broad Street within the newly renovated I.M. Pei building in downtown Augusta, is designed to support local businesses and create new job opportunities. The opening of the center coincides with ongoing construction on Broad Street, which is aimed at beautifying downtown Augusta.

The event featured David Nuckolls, executive director of the Georgia Center of Innovation at the Georgia Department of Economic Development, as a special guest. Nuckolls underscored the critical role of innovation and entrepreneurship in driving economic growth in the region.

In addition to the opening of the business center, the day prior, the Homeless Task Force conducted its bi-monthly outreach event, visiting homeless camps in the area. This initiative highlights the community’s commitment to addressing various local challenges while fostering economic development.

Funding for the new center was bolstered by $2.3 million in congressional support, secured by Senator Raphael Warnock. According to Executive Director Sean Andrews, the center encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to remain persistent with their business ideas, asserting that opportunity often materializes during challenging times.

The founders of ‘Our Cultivation,’ a business specializing in installing raised garden beds, credited the center with helping them define their business goals effectively. Margaret Woodard, Executive Director of the Downtown Development Authority, indicated that the mission of the center is centered around supporting entrepreneurs and small business owners, marking the launch of Accelerate Augusta as a significant step towards revitalizing downtown Augusta.

Jack Evans, Board Chair of Accelerate Augusta, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative and its potential to foster local entrepreneurship. The facility is designed to host various programs, including entrepreneurship events and pitch competitions reminiscent of the popular show “Shark Tank.”

As one of the key developments in the area, the project is on schedule and within budget. Essential installations such as plumbing, HVAC, and light fixtures have already been completed. The center is expected to be fully operational by March, positioning itself as a vital resource for the local community.

In conjunction with this grand opening, Aiken Regional Medical Center is also celebrating its 30th annual Cancer Survivor Celebration as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which once again showcases the community’s dedication to supporting its residents.

The establishment of Accelerate Augusta represents more than just a new business center; it stands as a hopeful initiative poised to enhance economic opportunities, stimulate downtown rejuvenation, and foster a spirit of innovation among local entrepreneurs. The overall investment reflects a strong commitment to building a sustainable future for Augusta.
