Born on August 18, 1942, in Augusta, Georgia, Montgomery was the son of John Henry and Ruby Lane Montgomery. He graduated from North Augusta High School in North Augusta, South Carolina, in 1961 before enlisting in the Marine Corps the same year. Over his 23-year military career, he completed two tours in Vietnam and served as a Drill Instructor at Parris Island, training hundreds of new Marines.
Montgomery’s military service was distinguished by his commitment to duty and excellence. He began his career as an enlisted Marine and demonstrated leadership capabilities that led to his commissioning as an officer. He ultimately retired with the rank of Captain. After leaving the service, he continued to support the Marine Corps through his work in the federal civil service, focusing on the Marine Corps Maritime Prepositioning Program until his retirement in 2002.
In addition to his military accomplishments, Montgomery was a devoted member of various veteran organizations. He served as the past commander of the Screven County, Georgia Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and was active with the American Legion, the Marine Corps Mustang Association, and the Marine Corps League. His patriotism extended beyond military service, as he also contributed to his local community through membership in the Sylvania Masonic Lodge #301 and the Screven County Shrine Club.
Montgomery was predeceased by his parents, brothers Charles and Bobby, sister Judy Matthews, and his wife, Faye McBride Montgomery. He is survived by his son, Rick; daughter-in-law Mikki; granddaughters Mary-Katherine and Paisley Drew Montgomery; great-grandsons Henry Laurence and Archie Montgomery Howard; and his brother Billy Montgomery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Montgomery’s memory can be made to Toys for Tots, reflecting his lifelong dedication to serving children and the community.
