Augusta, Georgia Obituary Updates for August and September 2025

Several notable community members from Augusta, Georgia, have passed away recently, with their contributions and legacies remembered by family and friends.

Dr. Michael Maurer

Dr. Michael Maurer, a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, died on October 20, 2025. A graduate of the Northwestern University School of Orthodontics, he was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Augusta.

Dr. Maurer is survived by his wife, Marsha Maurer. A private graveside service will be held to honor his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Disabled American Veterans. The family expresses their gratitude to the caregivers at Trinity Hospice and to Rev. Roger Schwartz for their spiritual support during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements have been provided by Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors in Augusta.

Mrs. Mary Brown

Mrs. Mary Brown entered into rest on October 12, 2025, leaving behind a rich legacy as a retired Assistant Principal in the Richmond County School System.

Her funeral service is scheduled for October 22, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church of Augusta at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Family and friends can pay their respects during a viewing on October 21, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband, Sylvester Brown, as well as children Sabrina Hagood, Marlon Brown, and Antonio Brown. She is also survived by her grandson Ricky Mathis Jr., numerous grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, siblings, and an extended family.

Joseph Ronald Nevils, Sr.

Joseph Ronald Nevils, Sr., known affectionately as “Joey” or “Bam,” passed away on September 21, 2025, at the age of 48.

A memorial service will be held on September 26, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at Thomas Poteet and Son, officiated by Rev. Taylor Tom. Following the service, friends will be welcomed to gather until 8:30 p.m.

Bam was born in Augusta and raised in National Hills, where he excelled at baseball with the West Augusta Little League and graduated from Westside High School in 1995. He worked for both Automatic Fire Systems and Peachtree Pest Control. Bam is survived by his four children, his mother Debbie Nevils Farr, two sisters, several nieces, nephews, and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronnie Nevils, and several grandparents.

Honorary pallbearers include several family friends and relatives.

Retha Bell Samuels Bussey

Retha Bell Samuels Bussey passed away on August 26, 2025. Originally from Aiken County, she graduated from Jefferson High School in 1965 and worked as a trainer at Kendall Hospital Supply.

Mrs. Bussey was an active member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Reverend John “The Preacher Man” Bussey, three daughters, a brother, four sisters, numerous grandchildren, and a large extended family.

Her funeral services are scheduled for September 4, 2025, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m., with a viewing to take place on September 3, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
