AUGUSTA, Ga. — An Augusta classroom veteran is the top teacher in the Richmond County School System, which picked an early-intervention teacher at Freedom Park K-8 School as its 2027 Teacher of the Year, handing Tameika Stokeling the honor at the district banquet on Thursday night.
Stokeling works in the Augment Early Intervention Program, where she gives students extra, focused help in reading and math. Her whole career, a decade so far, has been spent inside the Richmond County district.
She started out with kindergartners at Freedom Park, moved to Diamond Lakes Elementary School for five years of first grade, and came back to Freedom Park in 2023. Along the way she has chaired the first grade and sat on her school leadership team.
Stokeling earned three degrees at Augusta University and is now working toward a doctorate in education at Brenau University, the district said in its announcement.
She was one of five finalists. The others came from the Performance Learning Center, T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School, Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School and Cross Creek Comprehensive High School, covering subjects from social studies and Air Force Junior ROTC to STEM electronics and special education.
The win sends Stokeling on to the Georgia Teacher of the Year program, where she will stand for Richmond County against honorees from districts across the state. The district thanked her publicly for believing in students and helping them see what they can reach.
For Freedom Park, the award keeps a homegrown story in the spotlight: Stokeling first walked into a classroom there as a kindergarten teacher and returned to the same building three years ago to work with its youngest readers and math learners.
