HARLEM, Ga. — People living around Harlem near the Greenpoint/Pumpkin Center data center site in Columbia County should expect to hear and feel construction blasts starting Thursday, county officials said.
The controlled blasts are set for every other weekday from Thursday through Dec. 30, and each one will happen in a midday window running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The project contractor will carry out the work under all safety rules that apply, according to the county. Nearby residents may notice a short boom and some ground vibration when a blast goes off.
The site sits in a neighborhood first pitched to buyers with plans for shops and restaurants, and some homeowners have raised worries about noise, property values and living next to a large industrial use. The project is one piece of a broader wave of data center construction in the county that has drawn months of objections from people who live nearby.
County officials draw a line between this job and the bigger data center campus going up a few miles away, close to the junction of Interstate 20 and Appling-Harlem Road. The two projects are not connected, and the Thursday start date applies only to the Greenpoint/Pumpkin Center work.
Columbia County is the fast-growing suburban county that borders Augusta to the northwest, part of the same metro area. Its growth has been fueled for decades by Augusta residents moving into communities such as Martinez, Evans and Grovetown. That expansion took off in the 1970s, drawn by strong Columbia County schools and new highways, and it now brings large industrial projects closer to established subdivisions.
