ATLANTA, Ga. — In-person early voting in Georgia crossed the 1 million mark on Tuesday, setting a new high for a midterm election with nearly two weeks of advance voting still left before the Nov. 3 general election.

The secretary of state’s office counted 1,007,015 in-person early voters as of noon Tuesday, a week after early voting opened on Oct. 13. That beats the 2022 midterm by more than 12%; four years ago the comparable count was 894,412. Adding 48,916 returned absentee ballots brought total turnout to 1,055,931 by midday.

The count kept climbing through the afternoon. By the time polls closed Tuesday, the in-person tally had topped 1.1 million, and overall turnout stood at 15.8% of the state’s roughly 7.5 million active registered voters.

In a Tuesday statement, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said each day of early voting is breaking records, and he called the turnout a sign that Georgians trust the election process and the work of election officials in all 159 counties.

The numbers do not show which party is gaining. Because Georgians do not pick a party when they register, early ballots cannot be sorted into Democratic or Republican totals. In the May primary, Democratic turnout in the governor’s race rose by about half compared with 2022, while Republican turnout for governor fell by about a quarter.

Turnout is uneven across the state. Across an 18-county stretch of northeast Georgia, roughly 98,000 people had voted by Tuesday evening, about 15.1% of active voters in the region. Towns County posted the highest rate in that region at 25.3%, and Hall County had the most ballots with about 23,000.

Early voting continues through Oct. 30. Voters can look up their county’s early voting sites and hours on the state’s My Voter Page and follow daily turnout on the secretary of state’s Election Data Hub.
