Georgia Early Voting Nears 1.4 Million With a Week to Go

ATLANTA, Ga. — Georgia’s early vote keeps climbing toward a midterm record. The state’s in-person early count stood at 1,395,015 by Thursday night, the Secretary of State’s office reported, and a full week of early voting remains before Election Day on Nov. 3.

The state estimates in-person early turnout is running about 12% ahead of the same point in 2022. Early voting opened Oct. 13 and runs through Oct. 30, and voters can look up their county’s early voting sites and hours on the state’s My Voter Page.

An analysis of the state voter file through Wednesday morning offers a look at who is showing up. Of the 1,330,455 Georgians who had voted by then, either in person or with one of 62,718 accepted mail ballots, about 73% had also voted early in the 2022 general election. Roughly 11% had voted on Election Day four years ago, and 214,717 people, about 16%, had not voted in the 2022 general election at all.

Total turnout at that point was about 5% higher than at the same stage of the 2022 race, a smaller gap than the in-person numbers alone suggest, because fewer Georgians are voting by mail.

Which party benefits is hard to say. Georgia voters do not register by party, so early ballots cannot be sorted into Democratic and Republican columns. In the May primary, though, Democratic turnout in the governor’s race rose by about half compared with 2022, while Republican turnout fell by about a quarter.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has said the steady string of daily records shows Georgians trust the state’s election system and credited the work of election officials in all 159 counties.

The race for governor sits at the top of a long statewide ballot.
