AUGUSTA, Ga. — A 23-year-old man working security downtown died after he was shot early Saturday on a downtown block of Broad Street in Augusta, Ga., and Richmond County deputies now hold a murder warrant for an 18-year-old suspect.

Deputies were called to the block near 10th Street at about 1:52 a.m. on reports of gunfire. They found Trey’von J. Grandison of Augusta with at least one gunshot wound. Emergency crews took him to Wellstar MCG Health, where he was pronounced dead. The coroner has ordered an autopsy.

The sheriff’s office said Grandison was on the job as a security guard when he was hit, though it has not named the business. Family members described him as a hardworking young man, and he once played football at Westside High School.

Investigators identified a suspect, Middleton, 18, within hours. He is charged in warrants with murder and with having a gun while committing a felony, and the sheriff’s office warns he should be considered armed and dangerous. He had not been arrested as of Saturday evening.

Later that night the office also put out lookout notices for four other young men it wants to question about the killing, and it is asking anyone who sees them to call investigators rather than approach.

The corner of Broad and 10th streets has a history of late-night trouble. A gunman fired into a weekend crowd there in June 2024 and was shot by deputies, leaving three people hurt in all. Weeks later, on July 5, a man was arrested after an explosive device was thrown at pedestrians at the same corner. Two years before that, a man was shot in the neck there during an overnight weekend disturbance.

Those cases pushed downtown business owners to press for more protection, and the county has since added overnight deputy patrols along Broad Street.
