ATLANTA, Ga. — One Georgia teacher a week will get $1,000 to spend on classroom supplies under a new recognition program from the state Education Department’s Teach in the Peach campaign and the College Football Playoff Foundation.

The Teacher of the Week award will run for 40 weeks. Each honoree receives a $1,000 DonorsChoose gift code to buy materials for students, and the program will feature their work on Teach in the Peach social media, with the foundation adding monthly highlights of the winners.

Anyone can make a nomination, including students, parents, fellow teachers, principals and neighbors, and nominations stay open all year. A nomination should explain how the teacher has made a real difference for students, the school or the wider community. Nominations will be reviewed every month, and organizers say they want winners drawn from every region of the state and from a mix of grade levels and school types.

Nominations go through the Georgia Teachers Initiative, a statewide platform the foundation built with the Georgia Foundation for Public Education and the Atlanta Football Host Committee when the city hosted the 2025 national championship game. The initiative also awards Teacher Grants for Innovation, and donors who give through the foundation’s PEACH Education Tax Credit can claim a dollar-for-dollar state tax credit.

The weekly award is part of a larger foundation push worth more than $150,000 that also covers teachers in Houston, Miami and Las Vegas.

State School Superintendent Richard Woods called teachers the backbone of their communities and said the state looks forward to honoring 40 of them. Charm Mapp, the state’s reigning Teacher of the Year for 2027 and a 23-year classroom veteran, said having proper supplies matters a great deal to teachers.
