AUGUSTA, Ga. — With the midterm election just days away, Democratic secretary of state nominee Penny Brown Reynolds came to Augusta on Saturday afternoon to ask for votes, telling supporters at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church that she wants to pull a divided state back together.

Reynolds, a former judge, is running against Republican state Rep. Tim Fleming for the office that oversees elections in Georgia. She built her remarks around the idea that a leader has to care about the people being led, and she cast herself as a candidate for all Georgians no matter where they live or which party they support, or whether they vote at all.

A win on Tuesday would make her the first Democrat to hold the job in two decades.

The secretary of state contest is one of several statewide races on the Richmond County ballot. Augusta voters are also picking a governor, a U.S. senator and a lieutenant governor, plus the state school superintendent and the commissioners who run the labor, insurance and agriculture departments, and an attorney general. Closer to home, five Richmond County school board seats are on the ballot (Districts 2, 3, 6, 7 and 9), and those winners will help steer the county’s public schools.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and voters must use their assigned precinct. Several polling places in the county have moved since 2022, so voters are being urged to confirm their location before heading out. If no candidate in a race clears the threshold to win outright, a runoff would follow on Dec. 1.
