ATLANTA, Ga. — Democratic state Rep. Tanya Miller was elected Georgia attorney general on Tuesday, beating Republican state Sen. Brian Strickland with roughly 56% of the vote.

Miller will be the first woman to hold the office through election and only the second Black person ever to serve as the state’s top lawyer. She takes over in January 2027 from Republican Attorney General Chris Carr.

A former prosecutor, Miller told supporters on election night that she would enforce the law evenly, without regard to a person’s money, race, politics, neighborhood or connections. She also pledged to look out for Georgians who have felt overlooked by the institutions that are supposed to serve them.

Strickland, a lawyer, has been in the Legislature since 2013.

The Democratic margins at the top of the ticket were similar. Lt. Gov.-elect Josh McLaurin took about 56% against Republican Greg Dolezal, and Secretary of State-elect Penny Brown Reynolds won 56% to 44% over Republican Tim Fleming, becoming the first Black woman voters have chosen for that office.

Miller’s office will also inherit a changed political landscape at the Capitol, where Democrats were leading in enough Republican-held House districts late Tuesday to threaten the GOP majority it has held since 2004.

As attorney general, Miller will run the Georgia Department of Law. The agency represents the state in court, gives legal advice to state agencies and handles consumer protection cases.

The race was one of three open statewide seats Democrats captured Tuesday, along with lieutenant governor and secretary of state, on a night the party won every statewide contest on the ballot, led by Keisha Lance Bottoms in the governor’s race.
