Authorities in Georgia are investigating a shooting incident at the Augusta Mall that occurred on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old male. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office reported that the shooting took place around 1:15 p.m. during a fight that escalated into gun violence. The victim, identified as Devon McClain, was pronounced dead at 2:40 p.m.
In connection with the incident, two individuals have been arrested. Tyric Kendarius Logan, a 16-year-old from Augusta, was detained at the scene and is expected to face murder charges as an adult. Initially described as an active shooter situation, Sheriff Eugene Brantley clarified that it stemmed from a dispute involving six individuals that turned deadly. Two other individuals sustained minor injuries unrelated to the gunfire, according to authorities.
Following the shooting, the mall was closed until further notice as a precautionary measure. Security personnel played a significant role, providing video footage and suspect descriptions to law enforcement, which helped identify the suspects quickly. One suspect was apprehended on mall property, while the other attempted to escape to a nearby gas station. Authorities are also searching for at least two other persons of interest related to the case.
Emergency Response
Deputies responded to the scene within two minutes of the first 911 call. Upon arrival, they discovered McClain and initiated CPR before he was transported to the hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after.
In the aftermath of the shooting, emergency responders meticulously evacuated employees and patrons store by store. Employees from various retail outlets, including Macy’s and Zumiez, were required to shelter in place until it was safe to exit the mall.
Recent Violence Concerns
This tragic incident marks the third shooting at the Augusta Mall within the last two years, with previous incidents reported on April 28, 2024, and July 4, 2024. The repeated occurrences of violence have raised concerns about safety among visitors and employees of the mall.
Following the shooting, Sheriff Brantley addressed the community’s concerns about safety and gun violence, emphasizing the importance of violence prevention measures. The local law enforcement agency is working diligently to address these issues and ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.
The Augusta Mall has been a focal point of community activity. However, these violent incidents have led to growing apprehension amongst shoppers and workers. As investigations continue, authorities urge those with information regarding the ongoing search for additional suspects to come forward.
