Augusta, Georgia – A shooting at Augusta Mall on Tuesday resulted in the death of a 17-year-old, identified as Devon McClain. The incident unfolded around 1:15 p.m. and led to McClain being pronounced dead at 2:40 p.m., according to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen. A 16-year-old suspect, Tyric Kendarius Logan, has been detained and is facing murder charges as an adult.

Initial reports indicate that the violence began as a fistfight among approximately six individuals within the mall, escalating into gunfire. Although two additional people reported injuries during the chaos, their wounds were not related to the shooting itself.

Richmond County Sheriff Eugene Brantley clarified that this was not an active shooter situation, but rather a violent escalation stemming from a dispute. Law enforcement authorities responded swiftly, arriving within two minutes of the incident and securing the exits of the mall to ensure public safety. A deputy from the Richmond County Marshal’s Office administered CPR to McClain immediately upon arrival; however, the attempts were unsuccessful.

Authorities used surveillance video to identify and track suspects. During the response, one individual was apprehended on mall property while another was intercepted at a nearby gas station. The Richmond County SWAT team assisted in securing the perimeter and clearing the mall of potential threats.

As the situation unfolded, mall employees reported seeing people running for safety, prompting them to close store gates and evacuate patrons store by store, while some sheltered in place during the incident. Video evidence indicates that the initial altercation took place near the escalators of the shopping center.

In addition to the arrested suspect, investigators are searching for at least two more persons of interest connected to this incident. Despite the tragic events, Augusta Mall is expected to open as usual on Wednesday.

This shooting marks the third incident of gun violence at Augusta Mall within the past two years, following prior shootings in April and July 2024. In response to heightened concerns over safety, mall security’s preparedness and quick action were praised by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. The shopping center had previously addressed safety protocols by reiterating its zero-tolerance policy for firearms, aiming to reassure customers and staff of their safety while at the mall.

In light of Tuesday’s shooting, community members have expressed shock and concern about the prevalence of violence in the area. There is a growing call for measures to promote safety within shopping environments, as citizens reflect on this tragic loss and the implications for local security.
