Born on December 2, 1951, in Surry County, NC, Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Garnet C. and Esther Elaine Hiatt Dawson. She was one of five children, growing up in Carroll County, VA. After graduating from Mount Airy High School in 1970, she pursued a degree in education from Appalachian State University, which she earned in 1974. Following her academic achievements, she worked as a teacher for several years in Nelson County, VA, before dedicating her life to her family.
Elizabeth was celebrated for her home filled with love, laughter, and a notable culinary talent. She would often prepare holiday feasts and bake treats for her beloved grandchildren. Her ability to express love through acts of service, such as sending care packages, showcased her compassionate nature. Her Moravian heritage was also significant to her, as she delighted in the beauty of each season, filling her home with music and decorations that reflected her passions.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Benjamin Franklin Towe, and their three daughters: Heather Towe, Amanda Rumsey (married to Grant Rumsey), and Sheri Towe. Elizabeth was also a beloved grandmother to three grandchildren: Emmaline “Emmy” Rumsey, Elizabeth Belle “Betsy” Rumsey, and Evan Rumsey. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Rebecca Bradfield (married to Peter Bradfield), and two brothers, Porter Dawson and David Dawson (married to Janie Dawson), along with her sister, Linda Dawson. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Dawson.
A funeral service to honor Elizabeth’s life is scheduled for September 27, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Mount Bethel Moravian Church. The service will be officiated by Bruce Ayers, Acolyte, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, NC, on September 26, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause that reflects Elizabeth’s caring spirit and commitment to helping others.
