Bogart, GA — The community of Bogart is mourning the loss of Robert Eugene Smock, an esteemed 88-year-old Army veteran, who passed away on October 6, 2025. Robert, a longtime resident of the area, is remembered for his military service, dedication to family, and vibrant personality.

Born on January 21, 1937, in Osgood, Indiana, Robert was the son of Byron L. Smock and Gertrude Thola Smock. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Wayne Smock, and sister Ruth Ann Burdine. Surviving him are two sisters, Karen Decker and Bonnie Grigsby, as well as his devoted wife Joyce Janet Jenkins, whom he was married to for 66 years, and their son Dennis Smock (Amy), along with grandchildren Kristen Williams (Russ, Henley), Branson Smock (Dr. Maria Tesas), and Matthew Smock (Lauren Dawn, Eden Elizabeth).

Robert’s military career defined much of his life. He served in the United States Army for over 20 years, and his assignments took him all over the globe, including South Korea, Thailand, Laos, South Vietnam, and Ethiopia. His family relocated frequently, living in diverse locations such as West Germany and the Netherlands, in addition to various states across the United States, including Arizona, Arkansas, North Carolina, Maryland, and Georgia. He eventually settled in the Augusta area, where he lived for fifty years, retiring with his last assignment at Fort Gordon near Augusta.

Throughout his life, Robert had a passion for history and genealogy, especially concerning significant historical events such as the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, WWII, and the Vietnam War. He was known for his sharp sense of humor and quick wit, which endeared him to many in his community. In his younger years, Robert also enjoyed hunting and was recognized as a marksman during his military service.

In later years, Robert faced health challenges linked to Agent Orange exposure, which was a common risk for veterans of the Vietnam War. This connection to the military and his experiences have prompted his family to suggest donations to local military veteran support groups in lieu of flowers as a tribute to his life and service.

Funeral arrangements for Robert Eugene Smock are being handled by Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, West, located in Watkinsville, GA. His family invites community members to remember his legacy and celebrate his life. Robert will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, and a staunch patriot, whose contributions to his country and family will leave a lasting impact.
