Mrs. Brown died on October 12, 2025, while LCDR Miller passed away peacefully at home on October 13, 2025, at the age of 90.
Funeral Arrangements for Mrs. Mary Brown
Mrs. Mary Brown’s funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. The service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Augusta, with interment following at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Family and friends will have the opportunity to view Mrs. Brown on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Remembering a Devoted Educator
Mrs. Brown was a dedicated educator, having served as a retired Assistant Principal in the Richmond County School System. She is remembered for her legacy of love and kindness. Her husband, Sylvester Brown, and children – Sabrina (Keith) Hagood, Marlon (Veronica) Brown, and Antonio Brown – will carry forward her memory. In addition to her children, she is survived by a grandson, Ricky Mathis Jr., as well as four grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Other surviving family members include her sister Bertha F. Sutton, nephew Pierre (Denise) Patrick, and niece Kimberly Sutton.
LCDR Augusta “Gussie” DeGeorge Miller: A Life of Service
LCDR Augusta “Gussie” DeGeorge Miller, born on May 4, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, dedicated her life to serving others through her work as a nurse. Gussie’s commitment to service began when she joined the Navy Nurse Corp in 1960 and continued for 20 years, retiring in 1981. Throughout her military career, she was stationed at various Naval Hospitals, including Camp Lejeune, Guam, and Keflavik, Iceland. During her service, she was honored with the National Defense Service Medal.
A Journey Through Education and Nursing
Gussie graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital of Nursing, as well as the Sacred Heart Hospital School for Nurse Anesthesia in Allentown, PA, and earned her BSN from the University of Maryland. After her military retirement, she and her husband, CWO L.C. “Joe” Miller, moved to Cookeville, TN, where Gussie continued working with the Upper Cumberland Anesthesia Association until her own retirement in 1992.
Legacy and Family
Gussie and Joe met while serving in Keflavik, Iceland, and married in 1978 in Portsmouth, VA. In addition to her husband, Gussie leaves behind her brother Vincent DeGeorge of Pittsburgh, PA, sister Vivian Beck of Jupiter, FL, and multiple nieces, nephews, and a step-son, Lester “Tiger” Miller III. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Maile, of Pa’auilo, Hawaii, and her favorite cousin, Dominick Mauro of Haiku, Hawaii.
Memorial Plans for LCDR Miller
A private memorial graveside service, with military honors for Gussie, will be conducted at a later date at Young Cemetery in White County, TN. Memorial contributions may be made to Young Family Cemetery, c/o Peggy Robbins, at 331 Will Rd, Sparta, TN 38583. Gussie’s husband has expressed gratitude toward the Putnam County Fire Department, EMS personnel, and neighbors for their support during this difficult time. Arrangements for Gussie’s services are being handled by Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home in Cookeville, TN.
