In addition to these incidents, another collision was recorded on the Bobby Jones overpass connecting I-520 to I-20 at approximately 10:35 a.m. Earlier in the morning, Aiken County officials reported several vehicles were pulled over westbound on I-20 due to a car carrier accident around 10 a.m. Additionally, a multiple-car crash involving at least two vehicles occurred at the Walton Way extension ramp on I-20 eastbound at 9:25 a.m., exacerbated by sliding vehicles on icy roads.
The Georgia State Patrol logged 28 local crashes attributed to the winter weather conditions, with two resulting in injuries. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office reported a total of 48 crashes since midnight, three of which involved injuries. Meanwhile, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed 30 crashes between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, with five more incidents reported later. A tragic incident occurred when an 80-year-old North Augusta woman, Brenda Bevill, lost her life in a single-car accident on Knox Avenue, where her vehicle veered into a median and collided with a tree. The coroner’s office is currently investigating the matter and has scheduled an autopsy in Newberry.
Authorities have indicated that while no major roadways are closed, many secondary roads remain icy and dangerous for travel. Deputies have particularly advised against travel on Richland Avenue and Gregg Highway due to multiple reported accidents.
