Ralph H. Walker was born in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, to Grace (née Humphrey) and Ralph E. Walker. Following his military service, Walker pursued higher education, earning both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Kent State University in Ohio.
Initially, Walker embarked on a career in the aerospace industry, contributing his skills as a technical writer at Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Huntsville, Alabama, where he had the unique opportunity to work with pioneering astronauts of the United States space program. However, aspiring for a career change, he returned to academia and achieved his PhD in Political Science and Public Administration from the University of Georgia.
Career at Augusta College
Dr. Walker joined Augusta College in 1969 on a one-year contract, which he remarkably renewed every year for 42 years. He became the first chairman of the Political Science Department and was pivotal in establishing the Augusta College Research Center, along with implementing the Master of Public Administration degree program.
His influence extended beyond the classroom. Walker played a critical role in local governance, serving as an elected member of the Richmond County Board of Education. He was instrumental in the creation of the John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School in 1981 and worked as a consultant and writer during the significant consolidation of Augusta’s city and county governments in 1995.
