Augusta Wakes to Wind Chills in the 30s Before a Dry, Mild Week

Published October 18, 2026 at 6:33 am | By Melody Junior, Staff Reporter

HERE BREAKING

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Sunday starts with a real bite of fall across Augusta and the rest of the Central Savannah River Area, as a steady north wind pushes wind chill readings down into the upper 30s and low 40s around sunrise.

Anyone heading out early, whether to church, a ballfield or a morning walk along the river, will want a heavy jacket. The chill fades through the day under lots of sunshine, and afternoon highs should climb into the upper 60s. It cools off quickly once the sun goes down, with temperatures settling into the 50s for anyone headed to a fall festival or outdoor event Sunday evening.

The week ahead looks calm and comfortable. A persistent northerly flow should keep afternoon highs in the upper 70s and overnight lows in the upper 40s for most of the week, and no rain is in sight. That means outdoor plans for the coming days, from high school games to weekend yard work, should not need a backup for wet weather. Forecasters describe that pattern as very typical for the middle and end of October.

The quiet weather is a sharp turn from earlier this month, when the remnants of Hurricane Isaias swept inland and set off a round of tornadoes across the region. That kind of outbreak is unusual here so late in the year. Richmond County more often sees tornadoes during spring severe weather outbreaks.

The tropics are quiet as well, with no new storms expected to form in the Atlantic for at least the next seven days. Augusta sits on the Fall Line, where the Piedmont meets the Coastal Plain, which helps explain why the city can feel noticeably cooler on breezy fall mornings than spots closer to the coast.
