Among the attendees were Augusta Commission member Tina Slendak and Sheriff Eugene Brantley, who listened to the worries shared by local residents. The primary concern revolves around the shift from the original plan for a doctor’s office, which ultimately fell through, to a convenience store, which many residents feel was not communicated effectively.

Montclair resident Thomasine Deer provided alarming statistics regarding traffic incidents in the neighborhood, reporting that there were 34 accidents last year and 18 accidents so far this year, with three of those occurring in a single day. The residents are particularly anxious that the introduction of fuel trucks accessing the convenience store could exacerbate the already hazardous driving conditions in the area.

Slendak acknowledged that the neighborhood did not anticipate the necessary rezoning to allow for a convenience store, which has added to the frustration among residents. Deer expressed that the lack of communication about the changing plans has caught many locals off guard. Given the significance of their homes as substantial investments, these changes are understandably generating heightened concerns among residents.

In light of these issues, Slendak has committed to assisting residents in either halting the development or revisiting the rezoning discussions. The community remains proactive, planning additional meetings to further discuss the matter, reaching out to city leaders, and even considering legal action if necessary.

The proposal for Parker’s Kitchen is still in its early planning stages, and while the residents’ concerns are significant, the development has not yet begun. The ongoing discussions and community-organized meetings indicate a growing movement among Montclair residents to take a stand against the changes they believe could jeopardize their neighborhood’s safety and tranquility.

Adding to the community’s unease, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home invasion in the area on June 24, further raising concerns regarding local safety. This incident has contributed to an already prevalent anxiety amongst residents regarding the safety and livability of the Montclair neighborhood.

The outcome of the proposed Parker’s Kitchen development remains uncertain, but the Montclair community’s engagement and proactive measures indicate a determined effort to protect their neighborhood from potential negative impacts associated with the new construction.
