Augusta, Georgia – A 28-year-old man named Raekwon Brinson was shot and killed on Thursday afternoon at a convenience store in Augusta. The incident occurred at 3:14 p.m. at The One Stop convenience store located at 2382 Barton Chapel Road. Despite prompt emergency response and lifesaving efforts, Brinson was pronounced dead less than an hour later at 2:52 p.m.

The Richmond County Coroner, Mark Bowen, identified the victim as a resident of Barton Chapel Road who was a customer at the store when he was shot. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Brinson standing in the doorway of the establishment when he was shot at least once.

Witnesses also described a chaotic scene as law enforcement officials arrived at the location shortly after the shooting occurred. By 4 p.m., the store’s parking lot was cordoned off with yellow tape while crime scene technicians collected evidence near the entrance decorated with a red awning. Special units, including a law enforcement officer with a tracking dog, scoured a debris-filled area nearby in an effort to gather more information regarding the shooting.

Authorities have announced that an autopsy for Brinson has been scheduled as part of the investigation. Meanwhile, law enforcement is appealing to the public for assistance in uncovering further details about the incident. Individuals who may have information are encouraged to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 706-821-1000.

This tragic incident is part of a concerning trend of rising violent crime in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), which has seen hundreds of deaths over the past three years. As the largest city in the CSRA, Augusta has been notably affected by this increase in violence, with officials stressing the importance of community cooperation in addressing safety issues.

The One Stop convenience store, where the incident took place, is often frequented by local residents and showcases various features including faded blue payphones, where patrons can make 25-cent calls from their vehicles. The community now grapples with the impact of this tragedy, prompting discussions about safety and crime control.

The investigation into Brinson’s shooting is ongoing as authorities work diligently to piece together the events leading to his death. The public’s involvement is seen as a crucial element in solving this case, emphasizing the need for collective vigilance in the face of rising crime rates. Law enforcement is determined to ensure that justice is served in relation to this heartbreaking loss.
