Women working in a manufacturing environment

News Summary

Recent fluctuations in tariffs have significantly affected women-led manufacturing companies in Georgia, creating varied impacts across the sector. While some manufacturers like Odoban have reported minimal changes due to reliance on U.S.-sourced inputs, others, such as DeLong’s Gizzard Equipment, have had to adapt strategically to survive. The evolving landscape of trade policies appears to threaten U.S. exporters while providing stability for some sectors. Recent seminars highlight the industry’s efforts to navigate these challenges and prepare for future discussions regarding trade policies and workforce strategies.

Warner Robins, Georgia – Recent fluctuations in tariffs have significantly impacted women-led manufacturing companies in Georgia, with varying effects across the sector. As the landscape of trade continues to evolve, the so-called “T-word” has become a focal point of concern for many business leaders. While some manufacturers report minimal changes, others are feeling the strain of increased costs and supply chain disruptions caused by the shifting trade policies.

Countries such as Japan and Indonesia have successfully negotiated tariff reductions with the Trump administration, bringing their duty rates down to 15% and 19%, respectively. These agreements came with promises of U.S. investments and commitments to remove trade barriers. Additionally, South Korea’s commitment to $350 billion in U.S. energy purchases and investment secured a reduced tariff rate of 15%. In contrast, Canada saw its tariff rate climb to 35%, and Mexico has extended discussions regarding tariffs for another 90 days, indicating ongoing uncertainty.

Odoban, a manufacturer located in Warner Robins, has faced minimal impacts from these tariffs due to its reliance on predominantly U.S.-sourced inputs. The company’s CEO has highlighted the benefit of clear visibility into rising costs through impacted invoices. This transparency has enabled Odoban to manage pricing effectively despite the volatility.

Conversely, some companies have had to adapt more aggressively to the challenges posed by tariffs. For instance, DeLong’s Gizzard Equipment Inc., which specializes in exporting poultry processing machines, managed to withstand the pressure of a 50% metals tariff by increasing its steel stock and securing blanket purchase orders, thereby mitigating the adverse effects. The company is committed to controlling costs, prioritizing the retention of customer pricing as long as possible.

In response to the ongoing tariff challenges and supply chain issues, Thermacell Repellents Inc. established a “T-word task force” to navigate these obstacles more effectively. Previous tariffs on Chinese goods have prompted the company to diversify its supply chain, allowing for a broader range of sourcing options. However, the emergence of new tariffs has unexpectedly altered the landscape, affecting previously reliable sourcing locations such as Vietnam and Thailand.

The poultry sector is presently witnessing a phase of renewed stability as companies resume investments that had been stalled due to trade uncertainty. Nonetheless, the adverse effects of recent U.S. trade policies extend beyond tariff increases, leading to retaliatory measures affecting U.S. exporters and further complicating market dynamics.

Thermacell has faced significant disruptions in its supply chain, causing a planned factory in Wisconsin—which was intended to cater to the Canadian market—to pivot and fulfill orders from another offshore location in response to high tariffs. This highlights the profound impact of tariff policy on operational strategy and logistics within the manufacturing sector.

A recent seminar for manufacturing professionals, the Next Generation Manufacturing Seminar held on August 7, gathered 160 participants to discuss trade policies and best practices in navigating current challenges. This event underscored the collective efforts of industry leaders striving to adapt and find solutions amidst rapid changes in the trade environment.

Looking ahead, the 14th Annual Next-Generation Manufacturing event will provide an additional platform for discussions revolving around trade policy and workforce strategies, highlighting ongoing efforts to address the challenges facing manufacturers in Georgia and beyond. With diverse responses to tariff-related pressures, the impact of these evolving policies continues to shape the landscape for women-led manufacturing leaders across the state.
