Law enforcement officers discussing human trafficking case

News Summary

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr spoke at the Rotary Club of Augusta, discussing public safety, economic development, and efforts against human trafficking. He emphasized maintaining order during upcoming protests and highlighted the work of the human trafficking prosecution unit, which has achieved over 50 convictions. Carr’s address reflected a strong commitment to enhance safety and tackle social issues through law enforcement initiatives.

Augusta – Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr visited Augusta this week as the guest speaker for the Rotary Club of Augusta, where he addressed significant issues surrounding public safety, economic development, and efforts to combat human trafficking. Carr, who is running for governor of Georgia, took the opportunity to outline his office’s ongoing initiatives and response to public concerns regarding law enforcement and civil unrest.

Carr highlighted the importance of ensuring public safety amid rising tensions related to upcoming protests planned across the state. He emphasized that while peaceful protests are constitutionally protected, any form of violence or destruction during these events will be subject to prosecution. This statement comes in light of over 20 protests scheduled for June 14, coinciding with President Trump’s birthday and the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. Carr warned participants that violent actions could be pursued with Domestic Terrorism charges, underscoring the commitment of his office to uphold the law and maintain order.

A key point of discussion during Carr’s address was the newly established human trafficking prosecution unit in his office, aimed at tackling the pervasive issue of human trafficking in Georgia. This unit is focused on strengthening efforts through regional collaboration, bringing together local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to both rescue victims and prosecute offenders. The unit has been operational since 2019 and has amassed a record of over 50 convictions while providing assistance to more than 200 children.

To bolster this initiative, Carr announced the appointment of three new professionals to oversee the unit’s operations, following funding allocated in the recent state budget. Megan Adams, who previously served as an assistant district attorney in the Toombs Judicial Circuit, will take on the role of assistant attorney general for the human trafficking unit. Additionally, two criminal investigators, William Loomer and Patrick Brown, have joined the team. Loomer brings a wealth of experience in child predator operations and crimes against children investigations, while Brown, a former U.S. Marine, has a background in high-risk operations within law enforcement.

The growing concern over human trafficking reflects a broader societal issue, as many organizations and advocates work tirelessly to raise awareness about this crime and provide resources for victims. Carr’s initiatives signal a strong commitment to enhancing public safety and combating human trafficking effectively through law enforcement efforts.

In closing remarks, Carr also addressed the weather forecasts for the Augusta area, indicating that a stray shower or thunderstorm could occur, with temperatures expected to reach a high of 88°F and a low of 74°F. Nonetheless, the focus of his address remained firmly on the critical issues of public safety and human trafficking, reinforcing the ongoing challenges that Georgia faces.

The speeches at local Rotary clubs and engagements throughout the state exemplify Carr’s dedication to connecting with citizens as he campaigns for the role of governor, with a clear mission to improve justice and safety measures across Georgia.
