Edwin Latimer Douglass, Jr., known to friends and family as Edo, passed away peacefully at his home on July 25, 2025, at the age of 91, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Anne Lindgren Douglass, as well as his children Anne D. King (Michael) and Edwin L. Douglass, III (Danny), along with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Born on May 25, 1934, in Augusta, Georgia, Edo was the son of Mildred Garrett Douglass and Edwin Latimer Douglass. He also comes from an esteemed family background, being the grandson of T. Harry Garrett, a notable educator in Augusta.
Education and Military Service
Edo graduated from Richmond Academy before pursuing higher education at Davidson College, where he obtained a B.A. in Economics in 1955. While at Davidson, he was an active participant in campus life, involved with the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, ROTC, and the men’s golf team. In recognition of his contributions to the college, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 2005.
Following his graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Edo served overseas in Seoul, South Korea, as the personal aide-de-camp to General William Fitzsche of the 25th Army Infantry Division.
Business Career
Upon his return to civilian life, Edo established himself as a successful entrepreneur, owning and managing several businesses including Augusta Hardwood Lumber Co., Augusta Truck Sales, Phoenix Oil Co., Bennett Gas Co., Dixie Ice, and Radio Cab. He also served as president of Glynn Farms Inc. for over five decades, contributing significantly to the local economy and business community.
Community Involvement
Edo was deeply engaged with various organizations throughout his life. He held leadership positions in the Southern Hardwood Lumber Association and the Augusta Country Club. Additionally, he was involved with the Georgia-Carolina Boy Scouts of America, where he was honored with the Silver Beaver Award for his leadership and service.
His commitment to his community extended to various boards, including Augusta Preparatory Day School, First National Bank, First Union Bank, Georgia Forestry Association, Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and the ASU Foundation. A third-generation member and Elder at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, Edo’s steadfast faith was an essential part of his life.
Affiliations and Legacy
Edo was an active member of several prestigious clubs, including the Augusta Assembly, Heritage Club, Augusta Golf Association, Sea Island Club, Ocean Forest Golf Club, and Augusta National Golf Club. He was also remembered for his dedication to his family, church, and community.
Edo was preceded in death by his twin brother, Dr. Thomas Garrett Douglass. A memorial service is scheduled for July 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, located at 2261 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30909. Friends and family are invited to a reception in the Congregational Life Center following the service, which is open to family and out-of-town guests.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church or the Augusta Golf Team through the AU Birdie Club, with checks payable to Augusta University Foundation, and Fund #298000 noted in the memo line. Edo’s legacy of service, business acumen, and community involvement will be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
