Gladys Ann Sims Simpson
Gladys Ann Sims Simpson, who enjoyed a long career as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital, was an influential figure in Augusta. Born on August 13, 1930, in Knoxville, Tennessee, she was the only child of Clyde (Rick) Sims and Isabell Sims Graham Purcell. She was married to Van Buren Simpson, Jr. for 57 years until his passing. They first met while attending high school in Jacksonville, Florida.
Throughout her life, Gladys found great joy in spending summers at Clarks Hill Lake, where she participated in activities like water-skiing and floating with her family and friends. She was known for her passion for animals, particularly her dog, Sparky, and was recognized for her quick wit and love of storytelling. A devoted member of The Church of the Good Shepherd, Gladys also had a flair for fashion, owning over 200 pairs of high heels and maintaining a stylish appearance.
She is survived by her son, Van Buren Simpson, III, and daughter Isabell Hebberger. Gladys leaves behind several grandchildren, including Van Buren Simpson IV, Merry Glenne Piccolino, and William S. Hebberger, along with multiple great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Gladys are scheduled for Thursday, September 4, 2025, at 11 a.m. at The Church of the Good Shepherd, officiated by Rev. Dr. Bunny Simon Williams and Rev. Lynn Barnes Prather. Following the service, burial will take place at Westover Memorial Park. Memorial contributions in her honor may be made to St. Jude or The Church of the Good Shepherd.
Retha Bell Samuels Bussey
Retha Bell Samuels Bussey was a treasured member of the Aiken County community. A graduate of Jefferson High School in 1965, she worked as a Trainer at Kendall Hospital Supply and actively engaged in her church community at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
Retha was married to Reverend John “The Preacher Man” Bussey and is survived by three daughters: Shirlen Elaine Bussey, LaVerne Michelle Kemp, and Tissany Nicole McNeil. She also leaves behind a brother, James Samuels, along with four sisters and other extended family members including nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
Her funeral will be held at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. Christopher Armstrong. A viewing for family and friends will precede the service on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Professional care has been entrusted to G. L. Brightharp & Sons Mortuary in North Augusta.
