AIKEN, S.C. — U.S. Sen. Darline Graham brought a turnout plea to Aiken on Tuesday, Oct. 27, telling a crowd of more than 150 at Newberry Hall that her Senate race is too close for Republicans to stay home on Nov. 3.

The Aiken County Republican Club hosted the rally, which drew a number of current and former GOP officeholders. Graham said recent polling had her worried, and a new S.C. Policy Council survey shows her ahead of Democrat Annie Andrews by a single point, 47% to 46%. Libertarian Kasie Whitener is also on the ballot.

It was at least her third Aiken stop since she entered the race. Gov. Henry McMaster appointed her to the seat after her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, died in July, and she won a GOP primary runoff to make the ballot. Andrews has also campaigned several times in Aiken County.

Graham, who sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee, said she wants to keep pushing federal money toward Savannah River Site and other South Carolina projects, as her brother did. She described herself as a Christian conservative and contrasted her views with Andrews on abortion, gun rights and immigration.

Whoever wins would be the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from South Carolina.
