Location

Summerville occupies the elevated Sand Hills ridge west of downtown Augusta, centered on Walton Way and Milledge Road. The neighborhood developed from the 1870s onward as wealthy Augustans and northern winter visitors sought relief from the lowland heat, humidity, and disease risk near the Savannah River. Augusta University's Summerville Campus, the school's original site, anchors the district's eastern edge.

Character

Summerville's character is defined by large Victorian, Colonial Revival, and Greek Revival homes on tree-lined streets, many dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The neighborhood retains an academic and civic character owing to its university anchor and proximity to Augusta's medical and government institutions.

History

Summerville grew as a hilltop retreat during Augusta's antebellum and postbellum periods, later becoming home to the Academy of Richmond County and what would become Augusta University. Its elevation and cooler climate made it a desirable address throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
