AUGUSTA, Ga. — Augusta families planning a packed Saturday learned Friday that the Richmond County School System was canceling all Saturday events and extracurricular activities, including Lucy Craft Laney High School homecoming against T.W. Josey High School, because of expected Isaias weather.
District officials said classes and school activities would operate as normal Friday, Oct. 9, but that every event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, was canceled out of an abundance of caution. The emergency management team said it was watching the forecast closely and staying in contact with local emergency officials and the National Weather Service.
Laney homecoming football against Josey, along with the homecoming parade and tailgating, was rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17. Coaches and sponsors were expected to share other makeup dates as they become available for canceled Saturday football and other athletics.
Parents and caregivers were pointed to the district inclement weather page, the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, Richmond County schools social channels and local news updates for changing guidance through the weekend. Officials said student, staff and family safety remained the top priority.
The call came as Georgia prepared for damaging winds, heavy rain and possible tornadoes tied to Hurricane Isaias even for inland communities such as Augusta. Friday games and activities were still set to go on as scheduled under the district plan announced Friday.
Lucy Craft Laney High School and T.W. Josey High School are both Richmond County School System campuses, and homecoming week is a major community draw on the Augusta sports calendar. Moving the matchup a week gives families and bands time to reset once storm threats ease.
