HEPHZIBAH, Ga. — The Hephzibah Rebels turned senior and homecoming night into a rout Friday, Oct. 23, blanking Cross Creek 74-0 in front of a full home crowd at Big John McLeod Stadium.
Hephzibah sits about 10 miles south of downtown Augusta inside consolidated Augusta-Richmond County, and Hephzibah High School is one of the high schools run by the Richmond County School System. That makes the Rebels one of the county’s public school programs on the field each fall Friday, alongside schools such as Butler and Cross Creek, which is also a Richmond County program.
Hephzibah set the tone on the opening kickoff, taking it back for a touchdown, and never let up. Two first-quarter scores from Roosevelt Habersham, a senior tailback, pushed the Rebels to a 28-0 cushion before the second period began.
The margin grew to 55-0 by halftime, and Hephzibah added 19 more points after the break to close out the shutout.
The Rebels count more than 15 seniors on the roster, including two Division I commitments: Dextavion Reese, who is headed to Rutgers, and Keith Dunn, who has pledged to Georgia Southern.
The win lifts Hephzibah to 8-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in region play. Cross Creek falls to 0-8.
Next up, Hephzibah closes the regular season on the road at region rival Thomson on Friday, Nov. 6. Cross Creek hosts Thomson on Friday, Oct. 30, a week earlier.
For the Rebels, the lopsided result was the latest sign of a deep, senior-heavy team rolling toward the postseason. With the region crown within reach and a week off before the Thomson trip, Hephzibah will have time to rest and prepare for a playoff run. Cross Creek, still looking for its first win, has two games left to break through.
