Augusta, Ga. — Lieutenant Cory Carlyle of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office surrendered Thursday after detectives said he collected pay from the sheriff’s office and from a DFACS special-duty post for the same stretches of time.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said a tip arrived Oct. 5 pointing to work at a DFACS post on Fenwick Street while he remained listed as on duty with the agency. Time sheets covering 2026 from both employers showed repeated overlaps, the dual billing often called double dipping.
Agency investigators moved the file into a criminal review the next day. Investigators later said they had enough evidence to support a theft-by-deception count, false paperwork counts, plus an oath-of-office breach tied to a public officer. Carlyle checked in at the Webster Detention Center to face those counts.
Sheriff Eugene Brantley said rank does not shield anyone when integrity questions land on the desk, and that the office digs in when those claims arrive. Felony charging decisions in the county sit with the district attorney who covers Richmond and Burke counties.
The same Thursday brought a separate arrest of another deputy over license-plate reader misuse, part of a longer run of discipline cases inside the agency this year. Officials said any allegation that may break the law is worked and forwarded when the evidence supports it.
People with payroll records, schedules or other material tied to the Fenwick Street special-duty shifts can still reach the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. The district attorney who covers Richmond and Burke counties will decide how the felony package moves once the investigative file is complete.
