AUGUSTA, Ga. — Seventh Street between Broad Street and Reynolds Street in downtown Augusta closes to through traffic starting Wednesday, Oct. 14, so crews can install drainage and do exploratory work tied to the Broad Street project.
City officials expect the construction on that block to wrap up by Oct. 31, which means the closure will last a little more than two weeks. During that time, local access to businesses will still be available from Reynolds Street, so shops and offices on the closed block can still be reached by customers and deliveries coming from the river side of downtown.
Drivers who normally cut across downtown on Seventh Street are urged to plan ahead and use alternate routes through the area. The city thanked drivers and downtown businesses for their patience as work continues in the Broad Street corridor, where construction has reshaped traffic patterns for months.
The work sits in the heart of Olde Town, described in local planning material as Augusta’s oldest platted residential grid, downtown’s historic core along Broad Street and the Savannah River. The district is known for the Broad Street historic commercial district, and Augusta’s dining scene centers on the Broad Street downtown corridor and the Riverwalk, so lane changes on cross streets like Seventh ripple quickly into the restaurant and retail blocks nearby.
There is also visible progress on the main project. As crews move forward, they have begun planting trees and other plants along Broad Street to replace the ones removed when construction began. Updates on traffic alerts and overall project progress are posted on the downtown project website run for the Broad Street work.
