AUGUSTA, Ga. — A Waynesboro man is dead after a Georgia State Patrol chase ended in a wreck on the south side of Augusta late Saturday night.
The Richmond County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as Tom Ellison, 31. The coroner said a trooper used a PIT maneuver, the technique officers use to spin a fleeing car to a stop, and the car then wrecked where Dixon Airline Road meets Doug Bernard Parkway.
According to the State Patrol, troopers tried to stop the driver of a gold Chevrolet Malibu along New Savannah Road, close to Skyview Drive, at about 11:38 p.m. The car slowed at first but never stopped, and the chase moved south along the parkway before the trooper made contact near Center South Court.
The State Patrol said the Malibu spun, crossed into the center median and hit a tree. The driver was thrown from the car and was found unresponsive in the road. People at the scene tried to revive him until paramedics arrived.
Emergency crews took Ellison to Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center. The coroner said he died there at 12:28 a.m. Sunday, shortly after the crash.
Coroner Mark Bowen said an autopsy has been scheduled. The State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was called to the parkway and is investigating how the wreck happened. Officials have not said why troopers first tried to stop the car, and no other injuries were reported.
Pursuits that end with a PIT maneuver are reviewed by the agency that conducts them. The State Patrol has not released any further findings about the chase or the crash.
