Walk With the Spirits Brings Augusta History to Westover Sunday

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Some of Augusta’s best-known names from the past are back for one more afternoon. Historic Augusta’s annual Walk with the Spirits continues Sunday at Westover Memorial Park, where actors in period dress step into the roles of people who helped shape the city.

The first day of the cemetery event ran Saturday. Sunday brings four more shows, starting on the half hour from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., and each one lasts about 45 minutes. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $10 for students, with reservations available by calling Historic Augusta at 706-724-0436.

The format is new this year. In past years a lead spirit guided groups from grave to grave. Because Westover covers so much ground, organizers turned the event into a seated show with limited chairs, filled first come, first served for each time slot. Guests are asked to arrive 10 minutes early to check in.

The lineup of portrayals includes opera star Jessye Norman, the Rev. James Harris, Dr. Robert Benjamin Greenblatt, George Rowley Lombard, Hollis Chubbuck Boardman, Dorothy Fuqua, Marguerite Meta Phinizy and Susan Brooks Carr Ware Savage. The program also covers the history of the cemetery itself.

One of the performers said Saturday that looking back at the people who came before helps explain how the city arrived where it is today.

Visitors should use the main gate and park along the cemetery roads near Sections 15, 16 and 17. The seating area sits in woods with uneven ground and tree roots, which can make wheelchair access hard, so sturdy shoes are recommended. There are no restrooms on site.

Money raised supports Historic Augusta, a nonprofit that works to preserve historically and architecturally important sites in Augusta and Richmond County.
