AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Broad Street makeover in downtown Augusta is moving into a new phase, and it is changing both how traffic flows and how trash gets picked up along the corridor.
Paving is scheduled to start Monday on the block between 13th and 15th streets. While crews work, Broad Street will be down to a single lane in each direction there. The paving should wrap up in four days or less, but drivers should plan on delays or pick another route through downtown.
Garbage service has already changed for the stretch of Broad Street between James Brown Boulevard and Eighth Street. Augusta-Richmond County has asked residents and businesses on that section to stop leaving carts on Broad and instead roll them to temporary collection points set up on Ellis Street or Reynolds Street. The county tied the change directly to the construction work on Broad.
The work is landing on the busiest part of downtown. Broad Street is the heart of the historic commercial district, the restaurant and retail corridor that anchors Olde Town, which ranks as the most walkable district in Augusta and is tied to the Riverwalk. The improvement project has been making steady progress despite the disruption, and the changes that come with it are temporary.
Crews are also planting trees along Broad Street as part of the improvement project. The full job is expected to be finished in February.
Until then, drivers heading downtown can expect lane shifts and closures to keep moving block by block, and people who live or work along Broad Street should watch for new pickup or parking instructions as each section is done.
