AIKEN, S.C. — A driver died Wednesday afternoon in Aiken County after a car left Old Barnwell Road and slammed into a tree, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
Troopers placed the wreck at about 2:45 p.m. on Oct. 28 where Old Barnwell Road meets Deer Run Road. The 2011 Sonata was heading south when it drifted off the right shoulder and struck the tree.
Nobody else was in the car. The driver was hurt in the impact and died before leaving the scene.
The Highway Patrol has not said what caused the car to leave the road, and the driver had not been publicly identified as of Wednesday night. Troopers are still investigating the single-vehicle crash.
Troopers said the car went off the road on a southbound stretch of Old Barnwell Road, and no other vehicles were reported to be involved in the wreck.
